Homemade Butter

Making your own butter at home is much easier than you think - all you need is one ingredient and a sealable jar! Plus, it’s super satisfying to watch the process from start to finish. There’s a lot of shaking to do, so it’s a good one for the children to release some energy!

  1. Remove the double cream from the fridge 30 minutes before you begin.
  2. Pour the cream into the jar – it should be about half full.
  3. Start shaking the jar as hard as you can – it can take up to 15-20 minutes for the butter to form.
  4. Once you see a ball form – that’s your butter! The milky liquid surrounding it is buttermilk and can be used in other recipes, such as for making scones.
  5. Drain out the buttermilk and shake the jar for another minute.
  6. Spread your butter on some bread and give it a try!
